Hello fellow go player,
Welcome to the February, 2012
newsletter from Bay Area Go Players Association.
Read on to learn the latest about upcoming go activities here in the
San Francisco Bay Area.
Go Tournament in Menlo Park - Win a Copy of Many Faces of Go!
The
next go tournament in our area is coming up Saturday, February 11, in
Menlo Park at the Ing Goe Center, 887 Oak Grove Avenue. Doors open at
9:15 am, the first round of tournament play starts at 10:00, and we'll
wrap up around 4:30 pm. We use a flexible pairing system so you can come
for just part of the day if you only want to play a few games or if you
don't have time to spend the whole day.
Register online
for the tournament, or you can register at the door if you prefer. I
encourage you to register online, though, because (1) you'll save $5 on
your entry fee, and (2) you'll be entered into a raffle to win Many Faces of Go,
the 2008 World Computer Go champion and one of the strongest computer
go opponents available today. (Winner must be present to win.)
This tournament is open to players of all levels--we usually get players
ranging from about 20 kyu up to 6 or 7 dan. If you don't already have
an official go rating in the US, you will after playing in this
tournament.
You can get more information about the tournament here. If you have any questions,
contact us
and we will be happy to help you.
Mingjiu Jiang 7P at the Berkeley Go Club
Professional go player Mingjiu Jiang 7P will be at the Berkeley Go Club
on Saturday evening, February 11, from 7:30 to 9:30 pm. This is your
opportunity to have a pro comment on your game opening. Simply bring a
game record and show your moves to the pro. Be prepared to learn! The
Berkeley Go Club is located at 3051 Adeline Street, across the street
from the Ashby BART station. (Enter the building and take the stairs to
the second floor.) This event is sponsored by the Ing Foundation, and
admission is free.
Joey Hung 8 Dan at the San Francisco Go Club
Bay
Area Go Players Association is proud to sponsor another lecture by Joey
Hung 8 dan. Joey is one of the strongest go players in the Bay Area,
and he has much experience teaching go to adults and children at all
playing levels. Joey will give a go lecture at the San Francisco Go Club
on Thursday, February 16, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The lecture is free,
and you do not need to be a member of the club to attend. Players of all
levels are welcome. The club is located at 500 8th Avenue.
Last month Joey lectured on tesuji and had everyone work together to
solve problems, but bring a game record if you've got one just in case
Joey wants to review one of your games. You are welcome to stick around
after the lecture to play some face-to-face go.
Teaching Go and Giving Out Free Go Sets
On
Sunday, March 11, Bay Area Go Players Association will be sponsoring
the third annual Go Expo Day at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center in the
heart of Oakland's Chinatown neighborhood. Enthusiastic volunteers will
be on hand to teach the game of go to anybody who wants to learn. We'll
also hand out 9x9 starter sets and copies of the 60 page primer The Way to Go. The lessons, go sets, and books are all free. Do you have friends who are interested in go? Send them to Go Expo Day!
Please help us make this year's Go Expo Day the most successful yet: We
want to teach go to as many people as possible so that we can grow the
go community and keep it thriving. Encourage your friends and colleagues
to participate! Please post a flier (available in English and Chinese) at your school, library, or community center. Are you interested in teaching at Go Expo Day? Contact event organizer Jay Chan to sign up.
The free lessons run from 1:00 to 4:00 pm on March 11. The Oakland Asian
Cultural Center is located at 388 Ninth Street, suite 290. More
information about Go Expo Day is available here, and photos from last year's event are available here.
Until next time!
